I often hear this question from leaders at coaching sessions, daily life conversations in casual 'How are we going to cope with this new generation?
I prefer to transform this question into how we can establish a CONNECTION between generations because, of course, we want them to understand us as well.
To connect, to create a bond, means to create mutual DIALOGUE. In today’s world, where uncertainty and the anxiety it causes are more intense compared to the past, if this connection is not established and no one takes a step towards it, our assumptions and post-event scenario creations come into play (and we are very good at this:) everything turns into black-and-white, 0-1. Although the Z generation might not be matured enough in terms of communication, leading us towards two extremes, black or white, we, the generations with much better communication skills and more maturity, can use the power of connection to become their MENTORS or COACHES.
Sentences like 'Are you going to give me a %X raise otherwise I will .....' might lead us towards a black-and-white scenario, but if we turn this conversation into discussing things that will expand their horizons and try to understand their needs (career plans suitable for competency development, skills, network, etc.) and if we repeat this at certain intervals for mutual follow-up, this will lead us to connection.
In other words, constructive communication is the key to intergenerational CONNECTION in our pocket:)
When we become role models for them, they will also learn to improve their communication skills. they will see the possibilities of rainbow instead of black/white
